2.6  Organize Site Files and Page Settings

Ever seen a URL in a browser address bar that goes something like this:

http://www.somewebsite.com/page1.html? The creator of the website has not named

or defined the files in his/her website. Therefore, the files will be uploaded with the

program's default filenames. What about wanting to keep certain pages in your

website, but not wanting them to appear in your main navigation menu? The Page

Setting options help you complete both of these tasks, plus a few more organizational

gems.

These handy options make it easy to organize, name, and save your site files, as well

as being able to hide pages from showing up in your navigation menu. It's worth the

small effort that it takes to organize the pages and files in your site. It just gets quicker

and quicker in the future when you need to do some housecleaning with your site. The

other handy options found here include the feature to password protect your site for

private viewing on the web, as well as the option to add an external link to a page in

the navigation menu.

The page setting options are accessible from the Content window. Select the Website

heading in the navigation list to reveal the Page Settings section of the interface

(located at the right lower half of the main window).  There are five options: Page,

Show, Save As, External Link or Password. All of these options are editable.

Additionally, each column in the interface can be adjusted for width. Use your mouse to

increase or decrease the width of a column for more or less viewing space.

How to Use the Page Settings

Page Option:

The Page option keeps track of the page order and page names that are in your

navigation list. As you can see, they hold the same names and order that you assigned

in your navigation list when you were adding and naming pages. Each time you

change or add a page name in the Navigation list, ShutterBug will automatically apply

the changes to the page names in your Page Settings list, as well as in the pop up list

of pages shown in the Easy button panel.

Alternatively, you can change the name of a page from within the page settings list. To

change a page name in the Page Settings list, follow these steps:

1.  Double-click on the page name to activate the text field.

2.  Enter the new text and hit the Return/Enter key on your keyboard. The name will

also automatically change in your navigation list.

3.  To change another page name, enter the new text, and hit Enter. Each time you hit

Enter, your cursor will go to the next page in the list automatically highlighting the

text field so you don't have to use your mouse to highlight it. Continue down the

list, inputting the text and hitting Enter, until you are done.

Show Option:

The second option, called Show, contains checkboxes for each one of your pages. The

Show option lets you turn pages on and off in the navigation menu. To assign the

Show settings to your pages, simply check the checkbox to make the corresponding

page show up in your navigation menu, or uncheck the box to prevent the page from

showing up. These actions do not remove any of the pages from your website. You

have to delete pages to remove them from your site.

Note: Show options for Album pages contained within a Group function a little

differently than a normal page. ShutterBug is designed to not show pages inside of a

group in the top-level navigation menu as these pages automatically show up as a

thumbnail navigation on the Group page. However, these pages will also display in a

sub-menu off the main navigation, if you choose to "Show" them and use the sub-

menu feature in the Layout window (Chapter 7).  If you plan to include sub-menus for

the pages contained within the Group, keep these pages set to "Show".

Save As Option:

The third option, called Save As lists the file names associated with each one of your

pages. The file name is the HTML page name that ShutterBug uses to link pages

together. The name assigned is the file name that gets saved and uploaded with your

project. ShutterBug will keep these files set to the default name (i.e.page1.html), until

you change them. When you change a file name, ShutterBug will automatically update

the change in any of the links that you are using.

The filename of any HTML page will display in the browser's address bar as that is the

specific URL which people are navigating to. Therefore, it's good practice to give these

site files a specific name, not only to display a name that makes sense, but also to

keep things tidy and be consistent with the page name-file relationship. If you ever

have to examine the package contents of your project or the exported folder, you will

be happy that you took the time to give these files an identifiable name that you will

recognize in the relative context of your entire website.

For example, let's say we call our first page in the navigation list Welcome.  The file

name for that page will be listed as page1.html in the page settings Save As option.

This will show up in the browser's URL address bar as:  www.xtralean.com/

page1.html. To change this and assign file names, follow these steps:

1.  To change the file name from the default name, select it with your mouse and

double-click to activate the text field area.

2.  Enter the new file name text. You don't have to enter the .html extension -

ShutterBug will automatically add the extension for you.

3.  Then hit Enter/Return key on your keyboard to go to the next file name in the

list.

4.  Enter the new file name text. Hit Enter to go to the next item in the list.

5.  Continue steps 1 through 4 until you are finished.

Note: The Save As option will prevent you from inadvertently giving files the same

name and accidentally overwriting files. If you try to assign a file name that is already

being used by another page, it won't "stick."  ShutterBug will keep the default name,

until you give it a unique name that isn't being used by any of your other site files.

Options and External Link or Password:

This column contains the settings to add external links to your navigation menu as well

as the option to password protect your pages for private viewing on the web. You can

password protect the entire site or just protect a few specific pages.

To add an External Link to an Album Page in the Navigation:

1.  Under the Options column, click anywhere on the word 'None'  (or click the pop up

button) for the page you want to add the external link to (Note: You cannot add an

external link to the first page of your site).

2.  This action will reveal a small list of applicable options. Select Link To: from the list.

3.  Go to the corresponding .html page under the External Link or Password column.

Double-click on the text field to activate the text input box.

4.  Type in the desired URL to link the page to. Be sure to add the full URL including

the http:// prefix.

5.  To add more external links, continue down the list, repeating Steps 2-4, for each

desired page (with the exception of the first page in your list).

Note: You cannot add external links to a Group page as groups are designed to link

directly to the album pages contained within them. You must use an album page to

include an external link. You can add external links to album pages within a group; you

just can't add the links to the actual Group page.

How to Password Protect Your Web Pages:

1.  Under the Options column, click anywhere on the word 'None'  (or click the pop up

button) for the page you want to protect with a password.

2.  This action will reveal a small list of applicable options. Select Password: from the

list.

3.  Go to the corresponding field in the External Link or Password column. Double-

click on the text field to activate the text input box.

4.  Choose a password to use and type it into the text field.

5.  To password protect more individual pages, continue down the list, repeating Steps

1-4, for each desired page.

6.  Next, go to the area at the bottom of the interface labeled Password Protect Dialog.

The Phrase field will already contain the following default phrase: "Enter your

Password below and click Submit". This is the text that your visitors will see in a

dialog box when they first arrive to a password protected page.

7.  To change the phrase, simply highlight the current default text and type in the

desired text. You can also change the "Submit" button text as well.

8.  Once you've uploaded the password protection settings, visitors to your password

protected pages will be prompted to enter the password before gaining access to

these pages. You cannot web preview the password protection feature in the

Preview window; it will only be visible once uploaded to the web.

9.  To password protect the entire site, simply assign a password to the entry or home

page (the index page).
